Planning Before you are going to do something, there is nothing as sensible as goal planning. A plan as we know it is something thought about and written out in advance before the real action takes place and is actually a recipe for success. I mean a real plan in black and white, that is, put down on a piece of paper. Please do not underestimate the importance of a written down plan. Once we write down something it clears up a lot of hazy areas.

Brainstorming: Everyone occasionally needs an idea and while you may have times when ideas come with little or no effort, there will be times when the fountain of creativity seems to have dried up. Even if you’re not feeling particularly creative, you can still think and reason. By thinking clearly and using the following techniques, you’ll find an endless supply of ideas. Free writing. In other words, just write. The important thing is that you get writing, and keep writing. This will get the juices going.

Desire: I’m including desire as one of the principles for success because your desire is your internal motivation. It’s something that is personally important for you to attain. Your desire is a catalyst for greater achievement because you have already been sold on the value of achieving your goals; it’s not something that someone else wants you to do. You will find that the more desire you have to achieve your goals the easier it will be to do it.

Goals or Targets: I use the terms goals and/or targets simultaneously. A goal is nothing more than something that you are shooting for. Let me ask you, “Do you consider yourself a gambler?” Most likely you don’t, however, if you don’t have specific measurable goals written down for each area of your life and your business, and a plan for their accomplishment, then the odds are that success for you will be an accident. Your goals should align with your VALUES so that you are on purpose and not just writing goals for the sake of writing goals.

Persistent Action: Many of the world’s most successful people started small and built up their success through persistent action. The story goes that after one of Ludwig van Beethoven’s performances, several people were offering him their praise, when one woman commented, “I wish God had bestowed me with such genius.” “It isn’t genius, madam, nor is it magic.” Beethoven replied. “All you have to do is practice on your piano eight hours a day for 40 years.”

Working with a Coach: In my experience of working with clients there are often some very specific areas of focus that they want to work. Sometimes it might be about strategies and tactics that they can apply and other times it might be tackling areas of self doubt or misconceptions. I also notice that they rarely need to work on all aspects of a particular topic but more on one or two areas. Working with a coach helps clarify the direction you want to go.
