Decorating your garden can be a fun way to add a sense of style to a place you already enjoy spending time in. Design elements begin with an arrangement plan on where major elements should go. After you have that blue print you can move into architectural elements and then finish with the smaller and easy to add garden items. Garden Design and layout form the backbone of your designs. There is a practical component of your garden layout that must come before the visual layout. The garden must be organized to group appropriate plants together and to place plants in the proper order for sunlight to reach them. You don’t want your corn blocking out all of the sunlight to the rest of your garden for example. You also need to account for access, water availability and other fixed landscaping elements. You also need to think about the visually impact that your layout will have. Do you have lots of curves leading to very linear shapes? Or do you have areas that follow unique themes but don’t provide for a natural transition between them? How are you using your paths? Do they lead you and your eyes to pleasing destinations? The visual elements of a design can be one of the harder things to get right at the paper design stage but it is critically important to work on these elements before moving into construction. From raised planting beds to trellis and gazebos, adding structure and architecture to your garden design can add some dramatic style. Just imagine the style differences between a Victorian garden shed and a Japanese Pagoda and you get the idea of what a large difference just the right structure can make in your garden. Arbors, fences and walls, gates, bridges and outdoor furniture can all add their own style elements to your garden decor. There are many decorative items that are easy to add to your garden. Ones that focus on attracting wildlife include bird houses, bird baths and bird feeders. Other decorative items such as garden statues come in such a variety that you should be able to easily find ones that match your sense of style. Garden statues can be found in everything from religious themes to fantasy and make believe objects. Other items that are bigger often create dramatic visual impacts and these also need to be used sparingly. A water feature or a large statue are hard to miss and will immediately set the tone for the other elements. Outdoor furniture can also fall into this category, especially if it has a distinct visual style. The finishing touch items to your garden decorating can be the most fun to choose and place in your garden. They are usually simple elements that add some color and tie together other items into a harmonious experience. Wall art for fences or buildings can provide a lot of style and make an otherwise unattractive area into a focal point. Judicious placement of garden stakes can take the same theme and place them into the middle of the garden area. Let your creativity take over and try a variety of items and mix and match until you are happy. There are many options when it comes to garden decorating and the key to a great garden is to have a well thought our plan right from the beginning. If you have a good foundation you can make additions and modifications over time as you see fit. Don’t overdo it on the small but easy to add items as less is often more.
