Getting Pregnant After Miscarriage

It can be a daunting thing to think about getting pregnant after miscarriage because of the fear of a second recurrence. A miscarriage (called a spontaneous abortion by physicians) is the unintentional loss of pregnancy prior to twenty weeks of gestation. Statistics from the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, miscarriages will happen in around 25 percent of all known pregnancies. This rate may be even higher as many women will miscarry before they are even aware of the pregnancy.

It is not totally understood why women miscarry. In general miscarriages in the first trimester are attributed to the presence of chromosomal abnormalities in the foetus (which are randomly occurring).

The health and well-being of the mother can also play a part. A woman’s medical history can also be a factor, as conditions like diabetes (if untreated) and some autoimmune diseases as well as structural abnormalities in the uterus can all make a miscarriage more likely. There are also lifestyle factors, like smoking or drug abuse by the mother which can increase the chances of miscarrying. Aside from this, there are also miscarriages which occur simply because the egg was improperly implanted into the lining of the uterus - the good news is that this can be all but eradicated by having intercourse at the right times of the month, but more about that later.

There are a number of signs that may precede a miscarriage including lower back pain and cramps in the abdomen and pelvis as well as fluid or tissue and blood coming from the vagina. Bleeding usually precedes all early miscarriages, however many pregnant women experience blood spotting and some bleeding in early pregnancy, so it is not always a sign of miscarriage.

Commonly miscarriages in the early days of pregnancy don’t need medical treatment as the uterus empties itself of its own accord, much like a heavy period. If an ultrasound shows that there is tissue remaining inside the uterus, then medications may be proscribed to make the uterus expel them, or a clinical procedure performed to cleanse the uterus of the left-over tissue. It is important that no tissue remains in the uterus in order to stop any infection forming. It is normally recommended that couples don’t try getting pregnant after miscarriage for a number of months. If recurring miscarriages are a problem, then there are tests that can be done to see if they can determine the cause.

Before rushing out to get these test (which are not always painless) make sure that the cause of the miscarriage is not the egg being improperly implanted into the lining of the uterus. This can be reduced to a huge extent by knowing the correct times in the months for having intercourse and conceiving.

This time is when there is a cervical fluid which has the resemblance of eggwhites, which is the woman’s most fertile time of the month. When the man has a normal sperm count, then the couple should have intercourse every day of the eggwhite cervical fluid and should only cease once a rise in basal temperature is noticed in the woman. If there is a problem with sperm count, then it is important that intercourse is only undertaken every second day of the fertile cervical fluid up until a rise in temperature is noted. This will not only increase the chances of conception, but will also decrease the likelihood of miscarriage caused from improper implantation of the ovum in the uterine lining.

Pre-pregnancy preparation is also important, so your health must be attended to. It is important to make sure you are eating right, are keeping your weight in a healthy range and are getting enough exercise. It is also important not to smoke, and try to limit time spent around second-hand smoke. Caffeine should not be ingested, and alcohol is a definite no-go. Awareness of your external environment and any toxins you may be exposed to are also important - painting the house is out, unless ‘green’ paints are used, and carpeting should be avoided, as new carpets are often laced with formaldehyde. Importantly for getting pregnant after miscarriage, you have to remember to look at lifestyle factors like stress and emotional worries, and try to have intercourse at the appropriate time of the month.
