God’s Promises Give Reason to Rejoice

Every year at this time we start to hear Christmas carols in all of the stores, on the radio, and just about everywhere. Although all of the carols celebrate Christmas, they each have their own purpose and meaning, making each one special.

Luke chapter one tells of the song that celebrated the coming birth of Jesus. Jesus’s mother Mary was singing the song after she had been told by an angel that God would be giving her the Child of God to carry. God was sending His Son to save us from our sins, and Mary was to be His earthly mother.

Mary was a Jew, so she was certainly familiar with the Old Testament prophecies of a Messiah. She knew that in Genesis a Savior was promised after the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. The Savior was promised by God to save His people from their sin. Another prophecy came in the seventh chapter of Isaiah where we read that God’s Son will be born to a virgin.

I’m sure Mary was very excited that she had been chosen to fulfill this role in God’s plan. At the same time her cousin Elizabeth was also involved in a miracle from the Lord. In Luke we read of Mary singing in praise that her soul magnifies the Lord.

The song that Mary sang shows that she trusted God and believed that He would fulfill His promise to save His people through His Son. I pray that you take the time this Christmas season to stop and think about the promises of God and reflect on His work.

I hope that while you are thinking about what God has done for us that you see His Son as the Messiah who is able to save all of us from our sins. In the third chapter of John we read that anyone who believes and trusts in Christ to save us from our sin will receive eternal life.

I hope that this reflection on God’s promises will lead you to respond as Mary did, believing and trusting. And I hope that you rejoice in the Lord and trust Him to be your Savior. Merry Christmas!
