Thinking of Starting a Home Business

Many people dream of running a home business. The attractions include being able to work to your own schedule, no boss to report to, avoiding the stress of the daily commute, and co-workers, being able to choose one’s own clients, and have more time to spend with friends and family. That is the theory.

However, running a home business requires a strong level of self-discipline, and an ability to take control of your life. Working for yourself means not having to contribute to someone else’s vision. But are you sure it’s a good idea? Before committing yourself it’s a good idea to consider the following factors:

1. Think hard about whether or not you have the right personality to run your own business from home. Are you self-motivated enough? Well organised, and able to work alone for long periods of time?

2. Possibly the most important step: You must decide what type of business suits your needs and personality. There are a large number of business options to choose from, from being a massage therapist, a ghost writer, or maybe an eBay store owner or maybe a dog groomer. Spend a considerable amount of time learning about the types of businesses that are available and decide what best fits your needs, interests, and personality. To be part of a franchise, or totally on your own. If it all works out your home based business will be something you will be involved in, and will profit from, for years into the future, so you must make sure you will enjoy doing it.

3. Decide how you will use the internet and related technologies to grow your business, and learn as much as you can about what is available, and how it works. You will already know how e-mail makes it easy to communicate with customers all over the world, but need to know too how shopping cart software makes it easy to accept payments while you are offline and how groups and forums will help you create a community of people interested in you and your business.

4. A Business plan is essential, not a luxury, especially if you need to raise any sort of loan or investment in your business. It must show your goals, your start-up capital needs, projected running costs, your assets, your strengths and weaknesses, your competition and your marketing strategy.

5. One rule you would be wise to follow if you are going to run any type of business from home is to operate exactly as if you were in an outside office. This means getting dressed and keeping normal business hours. You will be much more productive, and feel more professional, if you follow some sort of routine, and not take time off when tempted to do so. Remember, this is your livlihood, your business, not a hobby. Try and find a designated work space in your home to convert into your office, where you can close the door and work uninterrupted.

6. In the beginning, you will feel you need to do everything yourself; be your own accountant, lawyer, sales and marketing team. You will wear all the hats. However this really is not the most productive and profitable way to proceed in the long-term. You should try to outsource as much as you can afford to, and focus on your strengths and the tasks which bring in the most profits. Above all, remember that you are the CEO and that it is your job to build and grow your business.

7. One final word of advise - try hard to keep a good work-life balance. It is all too easy to let your business take over your life, with detrimental effect on your family and friends. And your business will suffer too, if you burn yourself out. You could start losing interest in it, letting your customers down and losing them. Finding the right balance is essential for a successful home based business.

Try and follow these criteria, and you should have a long, happy and profitable home business to run until you decide to stop. Starting a home business can be a challenge but having the relevant information, a definite plan in place and following basic business rules will help start you off in the right direction. Go to it!
