When you’re building a network marketing business, you have to expect that you’ll make some mistakes along the way. Did I feel pressured? You bet. So I called J and let him know what was going on. He listened calmly and then said simply, “Come home.” But how could I? I didn’t have the keys. And I had no idea where my car was! “Get the keys, and come home,” he repeated, his voice low and controlled. I begged for my keys and made a promise that I’d return. Reluctantly, the saleswoman thanked me and added that I was her first customer back at work, explaining that she had just recovered from a hysterectomy. Oh yes, she did. J blew a fuse when I told him this. Was it tacky for the saleswoman to apply that kind of pressure? I think so. Did I think she was playing the sympathy card? In retrospect, yes. Should I have simply gone to another dealership instead? Probably. But did any of that matter? No. Because I had promised the saleswoman. And I couldn’t go back on my word. Now, it’s not like she had worked for my business. Not really. Not anymore than any other salesperson would have done. So I’m not really sure what my deal was. Maybe it was a female/uterus thing. I don’t know. You probably won’t be surprised to know that I ended up buying that car, or that I hated every day that I owned it. I’d like to say that I learned my lesson, and for the most part, these days I’m pretty good about walking away from something for a little while until I can make a clear-headed decision. This weekend, that loyalty gene triggered back on for some reason, and I ended up buying a network marketing service from someone J and I don’t really trust. Which would explain why, when I told him I had bought something from this particular network marketing professional, he thought I was nuts. The thing was, they were the first to offer the service (if I had shopped around, I could have easily purchased it elsewhere for the same price). And even though I debated buying from them (we both felt like their business practices are less than honest), in the end, I did it anyway. Why? I don’t really know. Probably because he was the first person to get to me. In California, there is no “cooling off” period when you purchase a car. That’s a relatively new law, and I think that most states still let you change your mind within a short period of time. After all, cars are one of the most expensive things you’ll buy in your lifetime, and sometimes our emotions get the best of us when we should really be making clear-headed decisions. However, when it comes to network marketing, I don’t know of any product, service, opportunity, or discount so fabulous that you have to take it where and when offered… especially when something doesn’t feel right. For no other reason that, if there’s money to be made on the transaction, there will always be another opportunity. Don’t make the same mistake I did. Promise yourself that, whatever the network marketing opportunity for a product or service, if the details are unclear, or if you have questions about what you get for your money, or are in any other way uncertain of the benefits of buying, you’ll wait to make a clear-headed decision. My recent mistake didn’t cost us a lot of money, but it could have. Learn from my mistake, and make sure you can walk away until you’re ready to make a sound decision. We do not understand precisely why they did it, but we can deduce that early man noticed a correlation between the weather and the stars, which were themselves not fully understood, of course. Early man, probably even as far back as Neanderthal man, noticed the relationship between the weather and herd movements and crop growth, or at least fruit and nuts on local trees, if they did not have planted crops. This means that people could see a relationship between the stars and food availability. This relationship was probably ritualized into some sort of religion like early Wicca. Therefore, the stars became a very important part of the lives of every single person and it is likely that astrology and astronomy were widely intermixed by the average person. However, there were also people who did not only use the stars as some enormous celestial clock and who tried to make sense of the whole shebang. I am going to relate below, eight of the most important dates or years in the history of astronomy before Christ walked on the Earth. Never forget that they had nothing but an abacus to do there calculations and no telescopes, which came about two thousand years later. 585 BC: Thales of Miletus (c. 625- c. 547), a Greek, predicted a solar eclipse in Asia Minor purely on the basis of his observations and calculations. It was not a lucky guess! c. 400 BC: the astronomer Oenopedes (5th. century). also a Greek, announces that the Earth is tilted on its axis with respect to the Sun. 352 BC: the Chinese report what they called a ‘guest star’, a supernova, which was the earliest reported sighting. 340 BC: The astronomer, Kidinnu (b. Babylon c. 379 BC) discovers the precession of the Equinoxes, ie the apparent change in the position of the stars caused by the Earth’s wobbling on its axis. c. 300 BC: a ‘committee’ of Chinese astronomers compile star maps of the visible universe. c. 240 BC: Chinese astronomers observe and make notes about Halley’s Comet. Also Eratosthenes of Cyrene (c. 276 - c.194 BC), a Greek, correctly calculate the Earth’s dimensions. 165 BC: Chinese astronomers notice sunspots for the first time. c. 130 BC: the astronomer Hipparchus of Nicea (b. 147 BC), a Greek, correctly calculates the distance to the Earth’s Moon and also rediscovers the precession of the Equinoxes.
