Wooden Garden Furniture As A Long Term Project

What do you do when you get a bit of extra time on your hands? If you are an open-air person, that could be when the winter comes and the nights close in or otherwise it could be in the summer when the days are longer, depending on the sort of person you are. In either instance, do you look for a project to fill your time? A lot of wood workers do. They look for a long term wood working project.

Working out your next long term wood working project is not at all hard if you have a garden. There is always something to be added or replaced in a garden. Maintenance is never over.

If you are looking for a long term wood working project for indoors, then I recommend a dining table with eight matching chairs or, if you are very experienced and meticulous, an intricate display cabinet.

However, to return to our medium level, long term wood working project of wooden garden furniture. Hardwood garden furniture is the best because it will last longer than softwoods such as pine, if it is well maintained.

However, timber such as Red Wood, Mahogany, Maple, Oak and particularly Teak are very costly, because their supply is restricted in many parts of the world.

Therefore, the first thing to do when searching for a long term wood working project, is to decide what sort of wood you can afford to use. Then, when you have the finances ready and know of a supply of the timber you would like, you can get a good set of wood working plans for that task. You can obtain these plans from a hobbyist or craft shop, a DIY store or online at a specialist Internet web site.

The wood working plans will probably give you an indication of how much timber you will need, but if it does not, then you will have to work it out from the exploded illustration and the dimensions on the drawings. This is not hard, just a little time-consuming.

The plans might also suggest which nails, screws, glues and tools you will have to have to have at your disposal before you begin. I believe that it is best to have everything in one place, before you begin, with the exception of any glass you may require.

It is also a good suggestion to make sure that you have all the tools essential for the job and that your tools are in good working order. The saws must be set well and sharp; chisels should be of the right size and sharp as should be the planer and the router.

Put a new blade in your knife as well and check your supply of sandpaper in the various grades. You should also have preservative on hand to treat those cut ends and seal the backs of everything.

It is a real gift that most people would like to have: the ability to choose a long term wood working project, stick with it and produce a beautiful, unique set of fine wooden garden furniture that will last your family for decades.

Are Free Woodworking Plans Worth It?

If you are going to create a stick of furniture, especially if it is fairly complicated or you have never manufactured anything like it in the past, it is a good idea to get a set of wood working plans. These furniture plans are not expensive and free woodworking plans can be found too.

However, it is prudent to be suspicious of free wood working plans as they may not be precise and you will have little recourse to protest if they were free or even pirated. Free wood working plans may be all right, but you do not want to find out that they are not half way through the task.

A good set of wood working plans, free or not, will give a clear exploded view of the object to be made and a narrative explaining the different steps and procedures. The plans may also make suggestions about the timber and tools to use, the length of time it could take to make in man hours and the difficulty level.

If you want a large compilation of wood working plans, there are CD’s around which have 14,000 on them for $30-40. They are a good bargain. Other places you could search are online forums, the library and craft or DIY shops. Shops are almost certainly the dearest option.

Once you have decided an item to build, you should consider which design you would like. A kitchen cupboard could be hardwood or softwood. It could be a Welsh dresser or a Scandinavian design. It could be contemporary, traditional, Georgian or Victorian, to suggest but a few.

Once you have answered these questions you can go searching for your wood working plans. You might be lucky or you may have to find the middle ground if you cannot find exactly what you fancy. This is why I think that it is better to buy a CD of plans that have been sorted into a database, so that you can easily find out what is available in your collection.

You could look for ‘kitchen cupboard’ and 100 woodworking plans might recommend themselves to you. Or you could enter ‘Victorian Welsh Dresser’ and only get two recommendations. The point is that you will not be wasting your time chasing a pipe dream, when there are no plans obtainable for the exact item you are looking for.

When you have a set of appropriate plans, I think that it is better to get them blown up, or maybe that is just because of my eyesight. However, it is a pain to have to remove your safety goggles to put on your spectacles every time you want to check a size. This is effortless from a CD because the majority of printers have a facility to print poster size. If yours does not, take the CD to a printer’s, an architect’s or a technical office. They will be able to print A1 straight from the CC.

Then you can affix this enlarged wood working plan to the wall or an easel and you are all set to start making your furniture in style.

Basic Woodworking Projects - Decking

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Timber, or wood, is still the first preference for furniture and other home and garden projects like decking. However, there is a large assortment of types of timber to select from. The first alternative is whether you will use hardwood or softwood. Hardwood is a lot more expensive, but it will not rot so quickly as softwood.

Both hardwood and softwood are attractive or can be made to look attractive with a suitable finish. Softwood generally takes more looking after, but can last just as long as hardwood, if it is sealed properly. If you want to paint the wood, then softwood is the better choice, because hardwood does not permit paint to soak in very well, but it will take staining, oiling and thin varnishing.

Once you have chosen which kind of timber you are going to use, you can think about which variety you want to use. If you are going to use hardwood, you have many alternatives, such as teak, mahogany or oak et cetera. If you want softwood the most common timber used is pine. Whichever you finally use, select each piece of timber with care. You do not want distorted, curved lengths of timber or pieces with an unwarranted number of knots in it. A good carpenter will inspect each length individually.

Then you will require something to hold the decking down. Nails or screws? Screws are almost certainly best because they will not come loose if the timber dries out. If you are using softwood, it will be OK to use stainless steel screws, but if you are using costly hardwood, then I would use brass screws.

You will almost certainly need three inch screws and they should be neatly countersunk, so that the screw’s head is just below the surface of the wood. You can then plug it or not. Yes with steel screws, not with brass screws, but it is really up to your personal inclination.

Prepare the area before you start. It is almost certainly best to use a concrete or slabbed base. This should be level and above the normal flow of rain water in your garden. If it does get wet, as when you wash it down, the water should fall through the boards and then flow away. You do not want it to stay under the decking so that mosquitoes can breed in it.

It is not difficult to lay a wooden deck, but it a good idea to obtain a set of decking plans to work by. They will make certain that you do not miss a stage. They will also give you good advice and tips about which materials to use and how to finish your deck so that it does not rot quickly.

Once you have laid your own decking according to the plans, you could put an advert in the local paper and hire your services out to neighbours and locals. Everybody likes the thought of sitting out on their deck or porch in the evening and once you become a regular customer at the builders’ merchant or lumber yard, you may qualify for substantial discounts on materials, which will make your pricing more economical.

Styles Of Garden Furniture

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011
Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles

If you want to get some new garden furniture, the first thing to do is think about the styles of garden furniture that would suit your garden and your preferences. If you already have an idea of what you want, you are already half way there, otherwise you will have to do some investigation on the various styles of garden furniture

This research can be done on line quite easily by typing ‘garden furniture’ into Google, but if you would rather more information on the furniture, you could get a couple of magazines on gardening and landscaping. If you prefer a more hands-on tactic, you can go around the home improvement stores and the garden centres.

In fact, you will have to go to the shops sooner or later anyway unless you intend buying on line too. I personally like to do some exploration on the Internet first and then use the knowledge that I gleaned from there to make informed decisions in the shop. I do not really trust the photos. I want to see and touch the garden furniture and check the joints and finish.

Once you get to the garden centre, you will discover different styles of garden furniture including: farmhouse or rustic, contemporary or modern, resort or poolside and these can be manufactured from hardwood, softwood, plastic or metal.

Hardwood is by far the most popular material for garden furniture and most people prefer the farmhouse style, although there are some fantastic modern styles as well.

No matter which style you prefer or what it is made of the number one best piece of advice is to get the best quality that you can afford. This is true of most things you can buy, but I think that it is particularly true of garden furniture because it has a very hard life. Just think about it: snow, rain, heat; temperatures varying from -5c to + 35c and varying humidity.

Cheap plastic cannot put up with those circumstances. I used to buy cheap plastic and needed to replace it every eighteen months. Then I bought expensive plastic and I still have some of that but in essence it only lasted three years. I have seen metal garden furniture and it always rusts, even if it is plastic coated, enamelled or painted. Softwood lasts well, but it will rot after approximately five years even if it is quite well maintained.

The only garden furniture that I have ever had or seen at friends’ houses that lasts and looks good all that time is hardwood. There is a broad selection of hardwoods. There are native hardwoods like oak, cherry, walnut, maple and beech and foreign hardwoods like mahogany and teak. These hardwoods can also be stained to practically any colour although most people prefer the natural look.

Hardwood garden furniture is easy to maintain as well: just rub it over with linseed oil once or twice a year. If you carry out this simple maintenance procedure the timber will not dry out and it will endure the elements for twenty years or more ensuring that you get maximum value for money from this, the finest of all the styles of garden furniture.

Why You Should Install A Pool Alarm

Sunday, May 1st, 2011
Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles

Do you have a swimming pool or are you thinking of having one installed? If so, then it is recommended that you have a pool alarm fitted as well. You could be asking yourself if you definitely need such an alarm, but all will be revealed in the rest of this article. A pool alarm can be incorporated into your present burglar alarm system, if it is flexible enough.

One of the reasons for installing a pool alarm is that it may be required by law, national or local. Numerous kids have been drowned skinny dipping in a neighbour’s pool when they are away on vacation.

Some local authorities insist on putting up fences, but they are largely ineffectual, so the move is towards pool alarms. This does not certainly have to be costly because most people who can afford a pool will have a home alarm system already.

If your local authority does not have requirements for alarms already, it might be worth checking out what legislation is in the pipeline. Most of the contemporary pool alarms are activated whilst there is a disturbance at water level, so they are good for deterring night-time aquatic intruders.

However, of course does not merely warn about interlopers, sometimes people fall into the pool because they are drunk. The alarm will allow you to rescue them. It will also warn about children falling into the pond, which is a continuous source of anxiety for parents with pools.

Because a lot of pool owners are no longer young and their children are grown up, they often wonder why they require to secure their pool. Well, one decent reason, besides saving lives, is that it can reduce your insurance premium. To be blunt, it shows that you are trying and so reduces your liability.

Pool safety devices are easy to install, particularly if you already have a warning system, scanners and siren fitted on your property. For most people who can afford a pool, the cost of an alarm is off-set against the peace of mind that it will deliver is quite minimal.

When you go looking for a pool alarm, there are plenty of places for you to try, but the best place to first of all is the supplier of your existing home security system. This is because they will be the best people to be able to combine the two systems so that you do not have two sets of sirens, two sets of detectors and two sets of everything else.

Once you have had a pool alarm fitted, you have one further moral obligation and that is to make sure that it works. This is simple. Set your alarm and jump into the water. Reset the alarm and walk up to your pool. In both circumstances, the pool alarm should have been set off.

You must check your alarm each month or two in conjunction with checking your existing home security system. This is a necessary preventive step, because you cannot expect items to keep working for years without needing some maintenance.

The Advantages Of A Swimming Pool

Thursday, April 14th, 2011
Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles

A swimming pool is an attempt to create a safe, handy environment in which to swim. However, they are quite costly to install and to maintain. If you live in one of the temperate zones, it is probable that you can find a river, lake or stretch of sea to swim in during the summer months. If you live in the tropics then you can swim all year round but the waters are likely to be more perilous.

So, a swimming pool is an excellent alternative. Public swimming pools are all right, but you have to select your times carefully or the water is full of discourteous kids frolicking about or old people just standing in the way of serious swimmers.

This can be very maddening and frustrating, which are two of the emotions you went to the pool to divest yourself of after a difficult day. You can in fact come out feeling more frustrated and annoyed than you went in.

The solutions are: join a private swimming club or spa; build your own pool; or marry someone who is wealthy. If you have the money, the best option of all is to own your own pool.

Although a swimming pool is expensive, it is not money wasted. Not only will a swimming pool encourage you to adopt a (more vigorous) fitness regime, a well-made swimming pool it will also add greatly to the value of your property.

People like to move into a home with a pool, because then they do not have to put up with builders and mounds of soil and jack-hammers and dumpers and noise for weeks and weeks on end.

Even better is if the pool has been well cultivated with trees and bushes in the right places to supply shade if required and sweetly scented flowers and bushes to provide wonderful smells wafting by on a breeze. All this ought to be set in a well-manicured lawn.

It is likely that you will have to have some form of pool fence, depending on where you live, so check on that, but put the fence as far back from the pool as you can or are permitted. You do not want to feel hemmed into your swimming pool.

There are two alternatives with pools; above and below ground. But there is no real choice if you have the space and money - it has to be below ground every time.

One of the cheapest options of underground swimming pools is to use fibreglass. It is a far cheaper way than a lot of people know. In fact, it passes most people by because they do not know about it. However, imagine all the labour it saves on butyl liners, waterproofing, tiling, grouting, etc.

The fibreglass pool is lowered into a hole and then you paint it - blue or green or turquoise, if you cannot make up your mind; tile the border and you are done. Then it is on with your favourite swimming costume and in you go.

Spend More Time Outside More And Have More Fun With Durable Patio Furniture

Saturday, April 9th, 2011
Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles

Advances in technology have led to new options for patio furniture. While the romantic notion of a blanket on the grass with a picnic lunch may still hold appeal for some, many people opt for almost living outside during the summer months. One of the biggest advances has been the widespread development of polyurethane. It has led to the manufacture of waterproof or water-resistant cushions. It has also allowed durable, attractive base units that will last for years, even with daily use.

By setting up a seating group outside, a whole new room has been added to the home. Living room sofas have nothing on the new outside seating arrangements. Best of all, family gatherings and parties are more fun when guests do not have to worry about spilling food or drinks. Clean up is easier, too. After the meal, a quick cleanup with a trash bag removes most of the party clutter. The inside of the house stays cleaner, because all of the activities are outside.

Many types of seating are available, including wrought iron, wood frames and durable plastic seat bases. Most of it comes already assembled and is easy to set up. The wonderful part is that it can all be padded with waterproof cushioning that protects you from the hard frames. The cushions should still be put in a safe place during stormy weather and when not in use. By protecting cushioning from the elements, it will last for years longer.

In addition to the advancements in comfortable seating, grills have some pretty impressive options and can be as easy to use as the kitchen stove. Choose from wood, charcoal or gas cooking options. The hood on the grill improves cooking time while locking in heat and moisture.

Coolers have advanced, too. You do not have to settle for a simple foam cooler to keep food and drinks cold. There are many types of coolers, including those that are similar to refrigerators and can keep food fresh without the use of ice, but with cooling elements.

The lawn, an old stand-by for gatherings outside, has been replaced by more durable flooring options. Since the area will be high-traffic, the grass can be worn down, leading to a puddle after rain. Choose a cement slab or tiles for the ultimate in durability. Synthetic grass is a good choice to keep the room looking green. Gravel and sand require some maintenance but are also good choices.

You no longer need to feel trapped inside after you send the kids out to play. An outdoor living room is great for relaxing and spending time with them as they play. You can watch them and increase the amount of quality time you spend with them. Interacting with kids more often leads to a much tighter family unit.

For those brave souls who love the outside, winter barbecues are a must. Have your guests grab the pillows and head for the Patio Furniture Vaughan for a good time. But do not forget the winter coats, it is still winter. Have a memorable party and brush the snow off the grill for a great time. You will not even have to worry about a cooler if it is cold enough outside.

While having a fantastic looking garden is important you will need to consider ways of allowing the beauty of your garden to shine through in various types of weather conditions. Some people also like to have the option of having their garden illuminated in the night. For these many people, looking at various landscape lighting options will allow you the opportunity of having your garden looking just the way you want it, no matter what the natural lighting conditions are.

In order to provide the right landscape lighting conditions, you will have the choice of a wide variety of lighting fittings. These fixtures can be in the form of lamps, lanterns, spotlights, halogen lights and even solar-powered lights. The cost of these lighting fixtures varies for every style of light.

If you are thinking of using landscape lighting you will need to decide where to place the lighting in order to achieve the best lighting effects. You may also want to consider which lights will shower your garden with a bright lighting. You can look in gardening magazines to get an idea of the many different ways that these landscape lighting fittings can be used.

While it may possible to get ideas for installing landscape lighting in your garden from landscape and gardening magazines, there is another way as well. For this other method, you should look at your garden in the daytime and in the night time. In the morning you will need to look what spots in your garden could be enhanced by the use of landscape lighting. Then, when night falls, you look out at your garden again and see what areas would benefit from the use of lighting.

Then, the morning after this nocturnal inspection, you should go out into the garden and mark out roughly where you think there is a requirement for lighting. Once you have looked at this area properly, try imagining what sort of lights will be useful. You can then go to the garden store to look for these lights, once you have chosen the kind of landscape lighting.

After you have bought your perfect lights and you have looked at the instructions on setting them up you will need to commence setting up the landscape lighting in a manner that will make the most out of your garden. You ought to try subtle and strong lighting in order to decide on the best for your garden; a dimmer can help with these tests.

After you have finished your trials and have installed your final lighting, you will see what a difference having the right landscape lighting can make to your garden. From now on, when night falls, you will see the beauty of your garden in a different light.

How To Clean Your Patio Or Driveway With The Karcher Pressure Washer

Saturday, February 6th, 2010
Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles

Learning the easy ways for how to clean your patio or driveway using a Karcher pressure washer will take minimal time and effort. By following a few steps to prepare for cleaning the surface and using a washer that has a minimum of 3000 PSI, you can clean the area quickly.

Many attachments are included with the machine that you select. An important attachment is the fifteen degree wand that is made specifically for cleaning concrete or cement drives. When you are preparing to use the washer be sure to try out the pressure on an inconspicuous corner to check for potential issues.

The pressure washer is very powerful and looks like a commercial piece of equipment. It has 10″ pneumatic tires and many industrial features. Wearing eye protection will be very important when you are going to operate this machine. Safety gloves that are durable will also be important to keeping you safe. Make sure that all attachments and nozzles are attached tightly in place so they will not come lose when the washer is running.

There are some steps to take in preparing for washing that will help you to achieve better results. Remove all toys, debris and loose dirt from the surface. When the washer is used, the spray will force particles to fly or be thrown up. When you have removed all surface dirt, use a commercial solution made to remove stains on spots. This solution is usually left on the spot overnight and is made for concrete, cement or asphalt.

Prior to pressure washing the driveway, pre-treat the area with a degreaser. This solution is put on any remaining spots on the surface and sits for five to ten minutes. The solution will break up the grease and will wash away with the pressure washer.

When the driveway has been prepared for cleaning, use the washer in even, overlapping motions. Start at the highest point on the drive so the dirt will flow down. When you have pressure washed the entire driveway and it is completely clean let it dry at least twenty-four hours. After the pavement is completely dry, apply a sealant that is made for driveways to protect the surface.

Outdoor Wicker Patio Furniture - The Benefits And Advantages

Friday, February 5th, 2010
Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles

Now that you’ve invested in patio furniture, you’ll want to ensure that it will provide lasting enjoyment. Luckily, wicker patio furniture sets can be well maintained for years with only a few simple steps.

Unlike other types of furniture, wicker has some special requirements. Without proper care, wicker can dry out, warp or crack. Simply follow these five tips for lasting beauty from your wicker furniture:

Select High Quality Furniture: This is probably the most crucial element in making sure you will have lasting patio furniture. For wicker furniture, quality pieces should have a metal frame, usually aluminum, and the wicker weave will be very tight without any gaps, or loose ends that let the frame show through.

Get Rid of Dirt and Grime: Eliminate dirt and grime before it can accumulate on your furniture. Simply wipe down your furniture from time to time with a damp cloth and soap. Avoid getting the wicker too wet as wet wicker has a tendency to stretch and warp. In addition, you should clean your wicker thoroughly at least annually year. You can also use a water hose for this purpose, unless the furniture is antique or painted and might get damaged from the powerful water pressure.

Prevent Wicker From Drying Out: Wicker patio furniture sets should be located in the shade. Natural wicker fibers can become dry and brittle when subjected to direct sunlight. Your furniture should also be kept covered and sheltered from inclement weather. If your wicker does get wet, do not allow anyone to use them before they are totally dry. Wet wicker is very fragile and can easily be permanently damaged.

Replenish Moisture: At the end of the season apply a protective coat of oil to your wicker furniture. This will help your furniture to replenish its moisture. Your furniture should be thoroughly dried before the oil is applied. Carefully rub boiled linseed oil into the fibers and wipe off the excess oil with paper towels. Afterward, the wicker should look shiny. If not, keep applying oil to the wicker until it will not absorb anymore. A note of caution, linseed oil is flammable so be careful when getting rid of the used paper towels. You should allow your furniture to dry for at least 24 hours before you use it again.

Protect Your Furniture in the Off-Season: When the cold weather hits, it is time to move your wicker furniture indoors to a dry, protected location. If you do not have room to store the furniture during the winter, purchase a high quality cover for your furniture. Wicker patio furniture sets are susceptible to damage if left outside for extended periods during inclement weather.

With the right care, wicker can be an inviting addition to any patio. The vast number of styles and colors of wicker available today mean that it can complement almost any dcor. Wicker furniture today comes in contemporary pieces as well as more traditional styling. By selecting the right pieces and giving them the proper care, you can have beautiful furniture that will bring you years of outdoor entertaining enjoyment with family and friends.
