Here is one of my favorite basic baby turnips recipe that will serve four to 6 people for a side dish. I simply enjoy eating baby turnips. I enjoy them raw for a quick munchie or to go with a sandwich at lunch time. When I happen to be am rounding up ingredients for chicken noodle, turkey noodle, beef and noodle, or vegetable soup, I merely plunk them in the cooking pot whole. Their small size makes sure that I don’t have to work over slicing them up for soups however they’re robust enough to end up being simmered for a long time in the pot without shredding to pieces. Down below is a recipe for baby turnips to be a side dish. Ingredients: 3 tbsps white sugar 1 tbs unsalted butter Pinch of salt Water to cover Put the turnips, sugar, butter and salt inside a medium size pot and pour in water until it merely barely covers the tops of your turnips. Bring water to a boil and then reduce heat to medium. Let the water to evaporate as your turnips boil and just put in a little bit of water if necessary to help prevent the turnips from adhering to the pot. Frequently stir the turnips to make sure thorough cooking. Carry on and cook the turnips at a gentle boil for eight to ten mins or until baby turnips supple when stuck with a fork. Drain all water and serve either warm or room temperature. You can easily adjust this baby turnips recipe to own liking by using more sugar or salt. Should you prefer a sweeter carrot recipe, add one more tablespoon of white sugar. Be sure to adjust the sugar to water proportions to guarantee that there is sufficient water to dissolve the additional sugar. If a lot of sugar is added to the recipe and the water inside the boiling pot isn’t increased, then the turnips may become sticky sweet and there is a possibility for the sugar to burn in the pan. Relish this baby turnips recipe! Cook up hush puppies and bake up a traditional mardi gras king cake this year. |

Friday, February 3rd, 2012Being A Social Vegetarian
Friday, January 27th, 2012| Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles |
Lifestyle changes are the hardest ones to make and one of the biggest lifestyle alterations that anyone can attempt voluntarily is to become a vegetarian. Often individuals find it more comfortable to become part of a support group whilst making lifestyle alterations; think of Alcoholics Anonymous, Weight Watchers or giving up smoking. Joining a support group can help the beginner vegetarian too. The advantages of being a member of such a support group are many, yet some of them are encouragement, advice and friendship. You may not require the friendship, but you might like to socialize with other vegetarians so that you can see how they deal with eating out and basically simply fitting into a society designed by and for meat-eaters. However, whether you propose giving up your old friends or not, you may find yourself gravitating away from them after a while quite naturally. Remember the old expression: ‘Birds of a feather flock together’? This is fairly standard. You will have concerns substituting something else for meat; you will become worried that your diet is deficient in some mineral; you will start asking yourself which restaurants serve real vegetarian food and plenty more. Your newly discovered support group friends will become a great source of encouragement and advice in this field. You may not like the idea of a ‘vegetarian support group’, but you could just as easily join a vegetarian dining club or vegetarian cookery group, the effect will be the same - you will learn and you will create new acquaintances. If you have difficulty locating such a group by the normal methods of your local Yellow Pages and an Internet search, try going to the local community centre, where there may be yoga classes - a few of the attendees will be vegetarians that you can ask. Or go to you local health food shop and ask there Likewise you could ask at a martial arts club or a Hindu Indian restaurant. If all else fails, you could begin your own club. If you set up your own club, find a supportive bar or restaurant that will cook your meal suggestions for that night at a reasonable price. After a time, I am certain you could build up a lovely little club of twenty people and the landlord might let you have your own room to dine in once a month like the Masons. If you think that this is too much in the early days, you could simply set up a blog. A blog is an interactive website, where you and others can post relevant knowledge. If you keep the name of the blog relevant to your town and vegetarianism, you should find that other people looking as you once did will find you, whereas you found no one. Once you have built up a circle of local, on line vegetarian sympathizers, you could suggest meeting once a month in the flesh and take the dining idea from there. An advert in the local paper would help too. If you would like to read more about Welsh food, food in general or cooking eggs in particular, please go over to Traditional Welsh Recipes |

Cooking Essentials (Part 1)

Without a doubt, the greatest difficulty confronting the human race is the production of enough food for the populace of the world. After all, food, including water, is the one thing that we can not do without. Everybody must eat enough, although many individuals do eat too much each day. However, it is not only a question of putting something or enough in our mouths, the food has to supply enough energy and enough nutrients. Our bodies need the nutrients it has to have to permit it to fight off attacks from disease, repair itself if it temporarily loses one of those battles and to only grow as we mature from childhood. We also need nutrients and energy to be able to get around, do our job and raise our offspring. Therefore, in order to get the most out of life, we all need to eat enough food of the correct quality. However, having enough of the right sort of food is merely part of the problem. You also have to know how to get the most out of that food by preparing it in the correct manner and combining it with complimentary foods. This normally involves cooking. Therefore, the capacity to cook is one of the most important skills that a person can acquire otherwise lots of the nutrients will be wasted and so costly food will be wasted too. However, cooking does not merely mean serving the ingredients in the right manner so as not to waste nutrients, it also means providing the whole assortment of nutrients and fibres that we need over the interval of, say, a week. Cooking has traditionally been seen as a woman’s occupation in most parts of the world but this is understandable because women were often at home with children for a large part of their early lives, however, that has changed in numerous societies. Since the introduction of the birth control pill, many women have taken on a different, more equal role in society. Not just that, but more and more people are selecting to live alone and indeed individuals are also living longer. This all points to a need for everybody to know how to cook. Each man an and woman should understand at least the rudiments of cookery so that they can take care of themselves or / and take an dynamic role in taking care of their family. This is not an simple job, if you want to get it right. In lots of societies, children begin helping their parents and grandparents prepare food from an early age. This is something that went out of fashion in many Western countries in the Seventies and Eighties. Luckily, this trend is reversing, however what is noticeable is that young Asian individuals living in the East are shunning learning to cook as ‘old fashioned’ as they are becoming more affluent. This is a real pity , yet we cannot expect Asian youth to learn from our mistakes. The family cook has additional responsibilities other than just those outlined above, the family cook also has to learn how to use the household budget wisely. In many families, the food budget is the largest part of the absolute household budget. That is a big responsibility. This just emphasizes the importance of cooking properly, procuring the most nutrients they can from food and minimizing waste. Some Of The Constituents Of Food
Wednesday, December 21st, 2011| Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles |
It is very useful to know something concerning the most common constituents of foodstuffs, so that you can use this knowledge to your advantage while choosing and cooking food. The more you know about the constituents of food the better prepared you will be to choose the best method of preparing that food. In this piece we will talk about some constituents of food. Carbohydrates are a concentrated form of energy as is fat. However, the two substances differ in several ways, not least in that fat supplies energy in a very concentrated form whereas carbohydrates deliver energy in a more economical manner. Over indulging in either fats or carbohydrates will result in becoming overweight fairly quickly. Therefore, this is the area that dieters should concentrate on, although ’specialists’ do not agree which is the most damaging. Traditional diets recommend cutting back on fats, whereas some more modern diets recommend virtually eliminating carbohydrates from one’s diet. The fact is that the body and most of the food that we put into it is made up of chemical elements, the most important of which are nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Protein is the only thing that we eat that contains nitrogen, which goes a long way to explain why protein is essential to us. Protein is also the most difficult substance to find in the vegetarian diet. It is not impossible by any means, but the choices are severely limited because most people get their protein from meat, fish, dairy and eggs. The other three elements: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen are constituents of carbohydrates. In fact, the very word ‘carbohydrate’ suggests the names of those three elements. ‘Carbo’ - carbon and ‘hydrate’ - hydrogen and oxygen, as in water. Carbohydrates are most present in starches and sugars. Starch is one of the most omnipresent kinds of carbohydrate. It is to be found exclusively in vegetables and pulses et cetera. When starch is boiled, it expands and bursts its cell walls causing water to thicken and when it is cooked with dry heat, it melts and turns into dextrine, which is a stage before it becomes sugar. Sugar is another important constituent of carbohydrates and is also discovered usually in vegetables and fruit, although there is also some in milk in the form or lactose. Corn produces glucose. Young vegetables contain sugar, but as they get older it becomes starch. Sugar melts with the application of heat, but if it is already in liquid form, it will give off water and start to caramelize. The distinctive colour or caramel is brown, yet if it is over cooked, it becomes dark brown and bitter. Sugar in fruit and vegetables will leach out into boiling water and so will be lost, unless that water is retrieved and used elsewhere. Cellulose is a form of carbohydrate closely related to starch. It is to be found in the structure of plants and vegetables and although it is largely indigestible, it cannot be ignored in the human diet. Cellulose surrounds the goodness we are looking for in vegetables, so by cooking this food we are attempting to break down the cellulose to release the goodness. Young vegetables have thinner cellulose than older ones, which is why some vegetables have to be cooked quickly and fiercely whilst others have to be cooked slowly but gently. Dental Concerns For Diabetics
Friday, December 9th, 2011| Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles |
The main problem for diabetics is not the lack of insulin, it is the result of the lack of insulin and that result is that the blood becomes ultra-saturated with sugar (or glucose). Everyone’s blood has glucose in it, the blood carries this energy to the limbs and organs to keep them working, but there is a fine balance between ample and too much. Insulin controls that balance, so if you do not make enough insulin, as diabetics do not, your blood becomes thick and sugary. That does not sound too bad on the face of it. Maybe a diabetic ought to be able to run further and faster than normal with all that extra energy being pumped around the body. Unfortunately, it does not work like that. The dense, syrupy blood cannot get into the thin veins and capillaries, which means a lack of energy in these places, which are frequently at the very ends of your body and in internal and external organs. Skin, hair, eyes, teeth and toes are all starved of the sugars they need to keep them going, not just to keep them super-fit. The places with the finest blood vessels start to go first. Not only that, but where the blood does reach will be more easily infected, because the bacteria think it is party time with all that extra food/energy in the blood. A small infection that the body;s immune system could usually have dealt with in a day or two soon gets out of hand. This is a major problem for diabetics and one of the areas that is easily infected is the mouth. Without the regular dental check-ups that affluent people can afford, the mouth would frequently be infected, as it still is in poorer countries and among poorer groups in rich countries. Children and older people are always needing fillings, extractions and infections sorted out. For diabetics who do not seek appropriate dental care this may soon be a major difficulty. Smoking exacerbates the difficulty. The problems truly start to mount up for smokers over the age of 45 when dental concerns normally start to resurface after 20 odd years of relatively healthy teeth and gums. Periodontitis is especially dangerous for diabetics. Periodontitis is an infection that affects the bones and gums in the mouth. It manifests itself in receding, bleeding gums. This exposes the blood rich in sugars to infection. Diabetics ought to inform their dentist of their condition and go for a check-up every six months. Diabetics can easily lose all their teeth if they get periodontitis and it is readily done with high blood sugar levels. The first sign of such dental issues is bleeding teeth or gums. It is imperative to regulate the blood sugar level to as close to normal as you can to avoid these and other complications and the two first keys to use are diet and exercise, otherwise you may have to resort to medication. Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a number of topics, but is now involved with diabetic friendly meals. How to Make a Vegetarian Pizza From Morocco
Friday, December 2nd, 2011| Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles |
Most individuals like a pizza but then pizzas are very adaptable for all sorts of diets. Vegetarianism is no exception. In this piece I am going to show you how to create a vegetarian pizza from scratch and the pizza I have chosen is a rather curious one. Americans might not immediately recognize it as a pizza there are other, especially German, examples of something comparable with this Moroccan pizza from Marrakesh. Marrakesh Pizza (Khboz Bishemar) 1 packet of dry active bread yeast 1/4 cup lukewarm water FILLING ======================== 1/4 lb vegetable suet - (approx 1 cup tightly packed) 3 tbls parsley, chopped 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped 1/4 tsp cumin, heaped, ground 1 red chile pepper, dried 1 tsp paprika, heaped tsp DOUGH ========================== 2 cups strong, unbleached flour 1 tsp salt GARNISH ======================== 4 tsp sweet butter, margarine (melted) or oil Sprinkle the yeast over 1/4 cup lukewarm water. Stir to dissolve then leave to stand in a warm place for 10 minutes or until the yeast has been activated and doubled in volume. Meanwhile, make the filling. Chop or grind the suet; pound the parsley, onion and spices in a mortar or chop finely to a paste. Mix with the suet and set aside. Mix the flour with the salt then make a well in the center. Pour in the activated yeast and enough lukewarm water to form a ball of dough. (Add more water if the dough seems hard to mould). Knead well until smooth and elastic or for about 20 minutes. Split the ball of dough into 4 equal chunks. Lightly flour a board. Begin patting the first ball of dough down to a disc shape, stretching and flattening it to make a rectangle roughly 8 x 14 inches. Spread one-quarter of the filling in the center. Fold the right and then the left side of the dough over the filling. Press down on this ‘package’ and start flattening and stretching it (with the filling inside) until it is the same size (8 x 14 inches) as before. Repeat the folding, this time right side over the center and left side under. Repeat with the other 3 balls of dough. Set aside, covered, in a warm place for 45 minutes. Heat a griddle. Prick the ‘packages’ with a fork six or seven times on both sides. Place on the griddle - they will begin to fry in the fat released from their fillings. Fry the ‘packages’ 10 minutes on each side, until crisp. Dot each pizza with a teaspoonful of sweetened melted butter or oil before serving. You can eat these Moroccan pizzas from Marrakesh with anything, but there is already a fat content, so it would be better to have them with a salad or even fruit. To complement this dish, drink what the Moroccans would drink - mint tea. Moroccans drink pints of sweet mint tea every day made from mint that just seems to grow wild everywhere.
