Monday, June 13th, 2011The Remodeled Garage Heater
Thursday, June 9th, 2011| Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles |
If you have converted your garage into a workshop or home office, you are sure to need heating in one form or another. This is because most garages are not built to the same standards of insulation as the main residential building. However, that need not present a difficulty. You may even have the opposite problem during the summer, as garages often do not have windows, or at least large ones, either. Exposure to air could be another matter that you will have to deal with, but we will come to that later. If you have a plentiful supply of dead wood, you could install a pot-bellied stove, but you will have to vent the flue outside. This is very easily done, since most garage walls are only one brick or block thick. However, if they do not burn properly, there can be a smell, which you may find unpleasant. Or you could use a paraffin/kerosene heater. They are cheap to buy and are readily portable. These heaters do not necessarily have to have a flue. They are easy to turn on as many of them employ an electric starter. Some also have a thermostat to regulate the temperature. They can be a hazard if there are children around as they can be tipped over. However, for most people, the glitch would be the smell given off. You could use an electric hot air heater. They are quite cheap to buy, are easily portable and do not require a flue, but they can create a very dry atmosphere and are costly to run. One of the most common choices these days is a gas heater. There are many different types of gas heater, but most run on butane or propane. Most of the models are fairly inexpensive. The main benefit of a gas heater is that they give consistent heat, are fairly cheap to run and are portable. Or at least many of them are. You could have one built in, but it is scarcely worth it, unless you are using gas that needs to be vented. Propane gas heaters also come with or without thermostatic controls. A propane heater could also double as a patio or deck heater on chilly evenings. These gas heaters come in two forms: vented and unvented. The unvented models are the portable ones. They use the air from the room and the vented models have a flue that vents straight out of the garage. The slight disadvantage of the unvented model is that you have to keep the room airy at all times. Therefore, if you decide on a portable, unvented propane heater, you must leave a window partly open in order to allow the exchange of air and these heaters can be used as patio or deck heaters during the spring and autumn/fall. However, the vented gas heaters are fixed and have a flue attached, so they cannot be taken outside. Furthermore, if you decide on a vented model, you would be better off getting a professional in to install it for you by the book. Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with the propane outdoor heater. Styles Of Garden Furniture

If you want to get some new garden furniture, the first thing to do is think about the styles of garden furniture that would suit your garden and your preferences. If you already have an idea of what you want, you are already half way there, otherwise you will have to do some investigation on the various styles of garden furniture This research can be done on line quite easily by typing ‘garden furniture’ into Google, but if you would rather more information on the furniture, you could get a couple of magazines on gardening and landscaping. If you prefer a more hands-on tactic, you can go around the home improvement stores and the garden centres. In fact, you will have to go to the shops sooner or later anyway unless you intend buying on line too. I personally like to do some exploration on the Internet first and then use the knowledge that I gleaned from there to make informed decisions in the shop. I do not really trust the photos. I want to see and touch the garden furniture and check the joints and finish. Once you get to the garden centre, you will discover different styles of garden furniture including: farmhouse or rustic, contemporary or modern, resort or poolside and these can be manufactured from hardwood, softwood, plastic or metal. Hardwood is by far the most popular material for garden furniture and most people prefer the farmhouse style, although there are some fantastic modern styles as well. No matter which style you prefer or what it is made of the number one best piece of advice is to get the best quality that you can afford. This is true of most things you can buy, but I think that it is particularly true of garden furniture because it has a very hard life. Just think about it: snow, rain, heat; temperatures varying from -5c to + 35c and varying humidity. Cheap plastic cannot put up with those circumstances. I used to buy cheap plastic and needed to replace it every eighteen months. Then I bought expensive plastic and I still have some of that but in essence it only lasted three years. I have seen metal garden furniture and it always rusts, even if it is plastic coated, enamelled or painted. Softwood lasts well, but it will rot after approximately five years even if it is quite well maintained. The only garden furniture that I have ever had or seen at friends’ houses that lasts and looks good all that time is hardwood. There is a broad selection of hardwoods. There are native hardwoods like oak, cherry, walnut, maple and beech and foreign hardwoods like mahogany and teak. These hardwoods can also be stained to practically any colour although most people prefer the natural look. Hardwood garden furniture is easy to maintain as well: just rub it over with linseed oil once or twice a year. If you carry out this simple maintenance procedure the timber will not dry out and it will endure the elements for twenty years or more ensuring that you get maximum value for money from this, the finest of all the styles of garden furniture. Hot Tub Developments Over The Years
Thursday, June 2nd, 2011| Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles |
Hut tubs have been commercially available for around 50 years, so you can guess that the technology has come a long way. In the early days, hot tubs were normally only a small round wooden tub that was bursting at the seams with more than two individuals in it. They were invariably round in shape and there was very little choice. The first hot tubs to appear in the States were seen in the 1940’s, but they were usually little more that than wooden barrels filled with hot water intended to give a long deep soak. In the 1950’s, the idea grew and families started to create or buy hot tubs in order to relax and to alleviate the indications of arthritis. By the mid 1960’s, individuals were adding home-manufactured heaters and pumps and very crude versions of the contemporary wooden hot tub were being born. One early innovator was Roy Jacuzzi who developed and marketed the first hot tub that incorporated swirling water and jets. This whirlpool bath literally began the whole industry in 1968. In the early 1970’s, manufacturers started to incorporate more powerful jets into their hot tubs and some manufacturers began making more comfortable designs out of fibreglass and acrylic. The business was taking off big time. Jacuzzi started to produce larger models so that friends or a family could all take pleasure in the experience together. Most of the modernizations since the late 1970’s have been technological, but these technical improvements have been quite serious. The filters are more readily accessible nowadays which means that they are more likely to be cleaned as regularly as they ought to be in order to avoid the build up of bacteria from decomposing vegetation and hair. This will pollute the water and could create a health hazard. Not just that, but blocked filters means that the pump has to work harder to circulate the water which means more wear and tear and eventually, more money. There is a better choice of materials and colours nowadays. Before, the option was: what sort of wood do you want? Now you can still have that choice, plus the choice of any colour acrylic you want as well. Or you can have an acrylic tub inside a wooden (or synthetic timber) exterior or skirt. The advantages of the synthetic materials are that they last longer, are easier to clean and can be impregnated with a substance that kills or wards off bacteria and mould. The seating arrangement can be personalized in contemporary spas to suit individual bathers. Every seat might have one or more directable jets and the seat itself might be made to a specific height for a certain person or for a certain injury or condition. The water heating provisions are a lot more flexible too. These days, the water can be heated by gas, electricity, your homes central heating system or by solar power, which is a colossal improvement if you live in a country that enjoys a great deal of sun. To top it all off, you can add aromatherapy oils and spa salt crystals to the water by placing them in a draw like in a washing machine and have them circulated in the water evenly. Keep Those Mosquitoes In More Ways Than One
Thursday, May 19th, 2011| Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles |
As much as we love the warmer months of the year, there is one thing we do not look forward to: Mosquitoes. Oh yes, these insects are not friendly at all. They carry more than one sort of disease. Yes, these lightweight insects, which float in the air around us, pick up numerous illnesses from who knows where, will leave red, itchy marks on your body. As Spring time and Summer time roll around, it is lovely to have doors and windows open, but it is also crucial to have screens installed for a home’s doors and windows. These screens are particularly crucial when it comes to opening up your home in the warmer months. Having these screens for doors and windows have been the best invention for keeping mosquitoes outdoors. When outside though, Mosquitoes will be zooming into you. Well, onto your skin more exactly. There are well over 300 scents that mosquitoes are attracted to and most of these scents are from human skin. For human beings to live, we need to breathe out carbon dioxide. Well, this is one thing Mosquitoes are attracted to. Yes, as soon as anybody exhales carbon dioxide, Mosquitoes are more likely than not, to make a b-line for your body. When eating outdoors, mosquitoes are going to want not only you, but your food too. They, like human beings, like salty foods. Foodstuffs rich in sodium are also filled with lactic acid. Another thing that draws mosquitoes to human skin is body heat and if drinking alcohol, that too attracts these pests. All right, so now you are asking yourself what you can do to repel these pests. There are several methods that you can use to repel them from your skin. If you are searching for something natural to repel any and all mosquitoes, try adding more garlic to your daily food intake. For some reason, garlic reduces the attractiveness of our skin. Now, you do not have to quite consume garlic, but instead take garlic supplements, along with B complex and vitamin B1 supplements. Adjusting your daily diet, by taking a few supplements, particularly in the hot summer months, will repel these unwanted insects. Now, if using natural products is not the path for you, there are lots of chemical products on the market. Let?s see, anyone who is not a fan of mosquitoes, can go to their local grocery store and look for such mosquito repellents as DEET, Oils and Electronic Repellents. DEET is made from such ingredients I can not even pronounce, but is mainly sold in solid or liquid form and is highly poisonous. If this does not sound good to you, there are a range of oils which can be placed on your patio table or wherever you sit outside. Some of the more widely used oils are botanically based like Citronella, Eucalyptus Oil and Soybean Oil. Naturally, anything botanically, is considered natural or organic and while used as suggested, will not injure the you. Electronic mosquito repellents have been used for a some time now. In fact, they are used in the desert, such as the Middle East, by American Soldiers. These electronic devices are made with chemical pheromones to attract them and electrified wires to instantly electrocutes these horrible insects. These days, there are also mosquito repellents which you can clip onto your clothing. This type of repellent permits the user to be free of mosquitoes for 120 hours and repels them from 15 feet away. This absolutely is one amazing, personal, repellent on the market today. Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on several subjects, but is currently involved with Electronic Bug Killer devices. Simple Ideas For All Kitchens
Friday, May 6th, 2011| Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles |
Is your kitchen a dull and boring place to work in? It does not have to be like that, you can change it fairly easily either yourself or by getting in professionals to do it for you. The trick is to know what you desire before you take a sledge hammer to your present kitchen. So, before you go about taking down what you already have, go about gathering ideas for replacement. You can get great ideas from the home refurbishment TV programmes, from home design journals, by looking at friends’ kitchens and by reading my suggestions below. Maybe the best place to start is to think about how to reveal your own personal style. This could be a broad trend like farmhouse, Tuscan, Mexican, modern, or it could be a little bit of many styles to make up your own. However, do not forget that there is a lot of scope to express your own individuality even if you choose a broad style. One trap to avoid is trying to get all the latest gadgets from a broad trend. For instance, if you pursue the modern broad style to its logical end, your kitchen will look like a cold, clinical hotel or hospital kitchen full of stainless steel. If you like all that sort of stuff , then okay, but it is uncomfortable for a family to feel at home in. If money is tight, you could just repaint the units a different colour and replace the handles. That will make a huge difference. Changing the background lighting is another fairly cheap way of altering the accent of your kitchen. Install subtle lighting under the wall cabinets and if you already have those, try fixing some spot lights to the ceiling and if you already have those, try adding some wall sconces for candles. If you have attractive pots and pans or want to get a set, why not show them off by fixing a rack to the wall from which to hang your pots and pans? it adds a very appealing effect to any kitchen. You can also make a colossal change to the kitchen (or any room for that matter) by changing the flooring. Solid wood is gorgeous, but if you cannot afford that, you could try veneered flooring or stone, if the floor will take the weight. It is a good idea to endeavor to use the kitchen flooring to bolster the broad image of your kitchen’s new style. If you do not already have one, think about creating an outdoor kitchen for use whilst the weather permits. An outdoor kitchen really frees up a lot of room and ‘usage’. People flow to the outdoor kitchen when the weather is fine and your indoor living space suddenly seems less chaotic. Last, but not least, the kitchen table. Just changing the style or shape of your kitchen table will have a big influence on the general look of your kitchen. Go from timber to glass or from square to round. Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on a variety of topics, but is now involved with contemporary dining room tables. Why You Should Install A Pool Alarm
Sunday, May 1st, 2011| Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles |
Do you have a swimming pool or are you thinking of having one installed? If so, then it is recommended that you have a pool alarm fitted as well. You could be asking yourself if you definitely need such an alarm, but all will be revealed in the rest of this article. A pool alarm can be incorporated into your present burglar alarm system, if it is flexible enough. One of the reasons for installing a pool alarm is that it may be required by law, national or local. Numerous kids have been drowned skinny dipping in a neighbour’s pool when they are away on vacation. Some local authorities insist on putting up fences, but they are largely ineffectual, so the move is towards pool alarms. This does not certainly have to be costly because most people who can afford a pool will have a home alarm system already. If your local authority does not have requirements for alarms already, it might be worth checking out what legislation is in the pipeline. Most of the contemporary pool alarms are activated whilst there is a disturbance at water level, so they are good for deterring night-time aquatic intruders. However, of course does not merely warn about interlopers, sometimes people fall into the pool because they are drunk. The alarm will allow you to rescue them. It will also warn about children falling into the pond, which is a continuous source of anxiety for parents with pools. Because a lot of pool owners are no longer young and their children are grown up, they often wonder why they require to secure their pool. Well, one decent reason, besides saving lives, is that it can reduce your insurance premium. To be blunt, it shows that you are trying and so reduces your liability. Pool safety devices are easy to install, particularly if you already have a warning system, scanners and siren fitted on your property. For most people who can afford a pool, the cost of an alarm is off-set against the peace of mind that it will deliver is quite minimal. When you go looking for a pool alarm, there are plenty of places for you to try, but the best place to first of all is the supplier of your existing home security system. This is because they will be the best people to be able to combine the two systems so that you do not have two sets of sirens, two sets of detectors and two sets of everything else. Once you have had a pool alarm fitted, you have one further moral obligation and that is to make sure that it works. This is simple. Set your alarm and jump into the water. Reset the alarm and walk up to your pool. In both circumstances, the pool alarm should have been set off. You must check your alarm each month or two in conjunction with checking your existing home security system. This is a necessary preventive step, because you cannot expect items to keep working for years without needing some maintenance. Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on several topics, but is now involved with speedo swimming costumes. The Advantages Of A Swimming Pool
Thursday, April 14th, 2011| Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles |
A swimming pool is an attempt to create a safe, handy environment in which to swim. However, they are quite costly to install and to maintain. If you live in one of the temperate zones, it is probable that you can find a river, lake or stretch of sea to swim in during the summer months. If you live in the tropics then you can swim all year round but the waters are likely to be more perilous. So, a swimming pool is an excellent alternative. Public swimming pools are all right, but you have to select your times carefully or the water is full of discourteous kids frolicking about or old people just standing in the way of serious swimmers. This can be very maddening and frustrating, which are two of the emotions you went to the pool to divest yourself of after a difficult day. You can in fact come out feeling more frustrated and annoyed than you went in. The solutions are: join a private swimming club or spa; build your own pool; or marry someone who is wealthy. If you have the money, the best option of all is to own your own pool. Although a swimming pool is expensive, it is not money wasted. Not only will a swimming pool encourage you to adopt a (more vigorous) fitness regime, a well-made swimming pool it will also add greatly to the value of your property. People like to move into a home with a pool, because then they do not have to put up with builders and mounds of soil and jack-hammers and dumpers and noise for weeks and weeks on end. Even better is if the pool has been well cultivated with trees and bushes in the right places to supply shade if required and sweetly scented flowers and bushes to provide wonderful smells wafting by on a breeze. All this ought to be set in a well-manicured lawn. It is likely that you will have to have some form of pool fence, depending on where you live, so check on that, but put the fence as far back from the pool as you can or are permitted. You do not want to feel hemmed into your swimming pool. There are two alternatives with pools; above and below ground. But there is no real choice if you have the space and money - it has to be below ground every time. One of the cheapest options of underground swimming pools is to use fibreglass. It is a far cheaper way than a lot of people know. In fact, it passes most people by because they do not know about it. However, imagine all the labour it saves on butyl liners, waterproofing, tiling, grouting, etc. The fibreglass pool is lowered into a hole and then you paint it - blue or green or turquoise, if you cannot make up your mind; tile the border and you are done. Then it is on with your favourite swimming costume and in you go. Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on several subjects, but is now involved with Plus Size Bikinis. Farmhouse Garden Furniture
Friday, April 8th, 2011| Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles |
Farmhouse garden furniture is otherwise called rustic garden furniture and harkens back to the old days of farms and country living. It has a style all of its own and is quite distinctive. By and large, farmhouse garden furniture is lumpy, bulky and heavy. Sometimes it is roughly cut, but that is not always the case although it is hardly ever carved in great detail. Farmhouse garden furniture is built to last. Farmhouse garden furniture includes the complete assortment of garden furniture such as tables, chairs, benches, gazebos and arbours. Farmhouse garden furniture is customarily made of local wood, but can also be made of iron. To compliment the garden furniture, there is also indoor furniture in the farmhouse style although this might be a bit better-quality, a bit less heavy so that it can be moved around for cleaning purposes. Farmhouse garden furniture is usually manufactured from local hardwood such as oak, cherry, maple, mahogany, teak or beech, but in fact anything that is to hand. Softwood, such as pine, is cheaper, but it does not usually last as long as hardwood even if it is maintained regularly and as it should be. Hardwood furniture may be stained, oiled or varnished, although it is normally best to just rub linseed oil into the natural wood. A little staining might help bring out the beautiful natural graining in the wood. Softwood garden furniture is normally full of knots which many people find ugly. If this is how you think, then you can give the furniture three coats of paint in order to safeguard it. If however, the knots do not worry you, you can stain and varnish it instead. In either case, all farmhouse garden furniture should be treated every year in the autumn; that is whilst the sun is no longer at its hottest and before the rain and cold weather set in. The trouble with anything manufactured of any timber is rot. Hardwood contains more natural oils than softwood so it is better able to protect itself, but all wood ceases producing these oils when you kill it by cutting it down. The oil on the surface is dried out by the sun and these dry areas then draw some oil up from deeper inside itself, but the further inside it has to draw the oil from the less it can draw, which means that sooner or later the outside becomes dry and then it will take in water. When that happens, rot has set in. Hardwood can last a few of years before it gets to this wretched state, but softwood will perhaps last less than a year. This is why you have to seal the oil in and the water out with paint or varnish in the instance of softwood or restock the oil by rubbing in linseed oil in the instance of hardwood. You could paint hardwood as well if you want to, but most people purchase hardwood farmhouse garden furniture because it has a beautiful grain and paint would only cover up that grain. Good farmhouse garden furniture is not cheap, but it is attractive, a problem to steal and will last a lifetime if well looked after by a few hours maintenance once a year. Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a variety of subjects, but is now involved with farmhouse dining tables.
