When you make your maxims universal it is impossible to act on feelings since these are not universal. Jesus too loved his mother and yet also said this: “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, bothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26). This statement by Jesus makes Christians uncomfortable for good reason. Jesus teaches that the greatest of all commandments is to love God and then to love your neighbor as yourself and yet here he is saying the Christian must hate his family and himself. Is it possible however that Jesus was saying that in order to be moral we have to give up and hate our sentiments and feelings of preference for ourselves and members of our family? He goes on to say: “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” Is giving up our love and preference for our families the cross we must carry? The spirit of Christmas is to give gifts to those who cannot give gifts back and so often we give gifts to our own children, but the real spirit of Christmas is to give gifts to those who really cannot give us anything in return. So it is a real expression of the spirit of Christmas to give food and gifts to people who are homeless and hungry and have nothing to give in return. This shows the kind of love God has for people and is not based on feelings of preference since God has no preferences for people but sends rain on evil and good people alike. When a family does this kind of charitable act at Christmas a child learns how to give without the expectation of return and learns to act on the maxim of helping others in need without an ulterior motive of gain. The love this child would develop for his family would then not be dependent upon feelings but rather upon how the family inspires him to think of others and to think of strangers who have needs. The child then learns to overcome his selfish preference not only for himself but also for his own family. And in this way we see that Kant and Christmas have a lot to do with one another. A long time ago I experienced a sense of enlightenment in nature. Then as I glanced up towards the seaside I noticed how the whole beach was made up of these individual grains of sand. Yet it had been the personal grains of sand which were the entire beach. In that moment my consciousness shifted. My consciousness expanded outward to incorporate every thing. I remember knowing there was a lizard sunning itself beside a bush up near the sand dunes. And it felt as if I was that lizard. I could feel how it was for my metabolism to quicken in the sunlight and how it felt to have my scales to rub in opposition to one another when i moved. At the exact same time there was a sea eagle above. I could feel the way it felt to have wind pushing against my wings and how it felt to look down with my telescope eyes. This feeling of being everything all in the exact same time has stayed with me. I can now drop into this connection and sense of oneness anytime I want to. At will.
