Steps To Find The Right Spa For You

How have you been lately? Feeling a little tired or stressed out? If so, you’re in need of some relaxation. Why not spend some time at a spa to restore your mind and body? Day spas are great for short-term fixes including facials, massages, mani-pedis, and other body treatments.

There’s no better place than a spa for personalized pampering. The staff at day spas know just the right tricks to make your tensions lift and make you feel wonderful. If you’ve never been to a spa you may need some help in finding the right one for you. Here are some suggestions.

Your first step is to consider your budget. How much you have to spend will determine where you go and what services you can enjoy. Once you’ve figured that out you’ll be able to narrow down your selections.

As a guideline, day spas with highly technical and specialized services charge more. Another thing that you have to consider is the proximity of the day spa to your place.

You wouldn’t want to travel so far after a pampering treat right? You also have to check out the services of the day spa that you’re eyeing beforehand, so once you’re there, you won’t waste your time deciding what treatment to have.

You could also do some research on the reputation of the spa.

You may want to ask friends and family what spas they recommend and what services they enjoyed. If they can’t help you, go online and browse some forums about spas. This will let you know what clients thought of a given spa’s services, prices and customer service.

As a final tip, going to the day spa should always be a relaxing experience every time. You shouldn’t be stressed by things such as snobby receptionists and incompetent therapists. It really pays to choose a spa carefully. Happy pampering!

Reducing Stress and Anxiety Using Essential Oils

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

A recently published study by Italian researchers concluded with the recommendation of bergamot essential oil being used for its anti-stress, anti-depressant properties as a “complementary” therapy. This is really wonderful news, as “complementary” implies its use potentially right alongside conventional or “Western” medicine practices. While conventional medicine has been somewhat accepting the physiological applications of essential oils (for treatment of MRSA bacterial infections, for example), the suggestion of aroma-therapeutic applications are often still met with a smirk.

The “big three” essential oils in terns of research performed on the psychological/emotional effects are lavender, bergamot and sandalwood. Each of these oils has been the subject of several controlled studies. The effects of each is distinct; at the same time, they’ve all shown statistically significant results in controlled studies relating to anxiety reduction. The point is that if one oil doesn’t work for you — you don’t like the aroma, or the actions weren’t precisely what you were looking for — don’t give up, as there are others worth trying.

We all know about lavender — it’s aromatherapy’s most commonly-used essential oil, with an incredible array of actions. It, by far, has the greatest amount of research supporting its stress-reducing effects. Interestingly, it’s physiological effects are similar to its psychological effects: it’s calming and soothing to the skin, as it is calming and soothing to the mind. Of the three oils here, lavender has the most sedative action. It directly supports sleep, reduces aggression, and lessens anxiety.

Research on lavender has shown statistically significant reduction in stress and anxiety through both inhalation and ingestion. Linalool, the “sweet” component of the oil, has been singled-out as the “active ingredient”, and has been the subject of additional research supporting lavender’s use (though the “whole” oil has an even greater effect). The research regarding ingestion had subjects taking the equivalent of 2 drops of lavender oil internally for 10 weeks. The researchers concluded the lavender capsule being evaluated was an effective treatment for mild-to-moderate clinical anxiety disorder.

Sandalwood’s “active” ingredient are the “santalols”, unique to this oil. It’s anti-stress effect can more precisely be called “centering” rather than sedating. Its physiological activity is a less defined than lavender’s — the oil is thought to interact with the pineal gland. Sandalwood’s use can support improved sleep/wake cycles, so that rest is more restful. This effect occurred with the test subjects inhaling the aroma, but was determined to be a result of the oil in the bloodstream, not through smelling of the aroma. This implies the oil will have the same result if topically applied.

As you can imagine, the bright sweet-tart smells of citrus fruit can be a nice pick-me-up, and bergamot perfectly fits the bill. It is the first choice anti-depressant aromatic, and acts as an anti-stress agent by bringing about a positive state of mind, rather than via sedation or lessening of mental chatter. Its use via inhalation is the preferred method. Regular exposure to bergamot’s aroma had test subjects report statistically better “mood reports” than test controls. Other researchers have noted bergamot’s ability to lessen perceived pain, and to actually alter the process by which our brains respond to stress. We just don’t find the same stressors as aggravating when inhaling bergamot.

So when the question arises, “which essential oil should I use” for stress reduction, the answer is you should experiment a bit. If you’re unfamiliar with these three oils, try a sample of each and see how you respond. It’s helpful if you like the aromas, that way you’ll continue to use them.

The general methods for each of these oils: lavender — inhalation, topical, ingestion; sandalwood — inhalation, topical; bergamot — inhalation. Your actual method of use should also be experimented with. All of these can used in simple diffusers (sandalwood alone may or may not be too thick for some cold-air nebulizing diffusers). The can all be topically applied as a natural perfume, or massaged into the feet (a highly receptive area for essential oils). Care must be taken with bergamot only, as it can be a mild skin irritant for some, and will cause the skin where applied to be hyper-sensitive to sunlight. If you choose to ingest a couple drops of lavender per day, be aware that this isn’t recommended for all oils, that the quantity should remain low, and the effects may take some time to experience.

How Office Stress Builds Up

Sunday, May 15th, 2011
Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles

Office stress is a very frequent occurrence. Office stress comes about because of the pressures of the work, which is frequently not so easy to define, particularly in a small firm. In a large office, jobs are quite clearly defined and everybody knows what they are responsible for.

In a small office though, the few members of staff often have to cover a dozen or so different jobs and so office stress can build up. Office stress can build up rapidly if the boss is unsympathetic or a member of a small office team goes off pregnant or sick whether a temporary stand-in is found or not.

Office stress is a very real phenomenon especially in a small business. For example, it is not uncommon for a company with $1 annual turnover to be managed by a staff of two - the office manager and a secretary. This means that the office manager has to be able to do each job and it is hoped that the secretary will be able to do most of them too. This creates office stress.

The secretary-cum-assistant will have to understand filing, typing, word-processing, data entry for book-keeping software, how to read job sheets, time sheets and invoices. The secretary will also have to welcome visitors, but keep sales people at bay, while staying polite.

The secretary will also have to have good phone manners and be able to reply to enough questions to be able to shield the manager from time wasters and deal with serious questions if the manager is not in. These jobs are difficult enough on their own, but office stress builds up if you find yourself trying to do three jobs at once and that is not uncommon.

You could be keying in time sheet data the manager has gone to visit site, when the phone rings with an enquirey and a potential client comes in asking for a quote. This is enough to make office stress soar.

The manager will also have to be able to carry out these tasks, but the office supervisor will also be responsible for management accounts, pay, job costing, pricing, writing letters and keeping up with the law as the Company Secretary, which means that he/she will need to know enough about employment law to advise the directors.

This leads to terrific office stress. Besides all this, the office manager is usually responsible for paying and collecting taxes and keeping up with regulations and employment law. In these days of litigation and government claw backs, mistakes in any legal field are punished with expensive fines or compensation claims. This level of responsibility also only raises the level of office stress.

The problem is that office stress, like most kinds of stress, leads to tension and irritability and irritability can lead to a short fuse and flashes of temper, which merely goes to worsen the situation and raise the degree of office stress another peg.

The degrees of office stress soar if an important piece of office equipment breaks down, because it is always just as you need it. Because it can take hours or even days to get it repaired, you are expected to be able to carry out minor repairs yourself. And then if the boss is an unsympathetic or just unlikeable person then the level of office stress can get even worse.

When Fear Is A Part Of Life At School

Saturday, April 30th, 2011
Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles

Do you have happy memories of your school years? Do you have happy memories of teachers and school friends? If you do then you were lucky, because some kids hate every minute of being in school and not because they are no good at it either. Frequently it is the clever kids who are taunted for being swots and teachers’ pets. They are safe and sound in the class, but the travelling to and from school and the school breaks can become nightmares.

However, it is not only bullying from other children that causes fear in school children. There are other reasons for fear in school too. Sometimes, children think that a certain teacher does not like them and occasionally children are just afraid of failing or doing badly. Occasionally teachers are frightened of doing badly as well. It can all lead to an atmosphere of fear at school. It makes you ask yourself how anyone could have enjoyed their school days, does it not?

This atmosphere of fear can be greater in state schools because the teachers are subject to success charts and the children are more open to bullying. Furthermore, all of the school shootings in the world have taken place in state run schools.

However, the most subtle form of fear in school comes from teachers who are scared of missing the targets set by the state, because that will cost them their jobs. This fear is passed on to their pupils. The regime of fear is exacerbated by over-sized groups. Why?

Because teachers can hold the attention of only so many pupils - as we all can in normal discourse. Therefore, if the class is too large, the teacher will have to switch roles from being a teacher to a controller. When this happens, education suffers for the sake of restoring order.

For all of these reasons and more, many parents are turning to home schooling. Some of the reasons why parents are deciding to educate their children themselves are: distrust of the state education system; fear of bullying or worse of their children; a desire to teach their children in a more conventional or religious manner.

There are education packages that parent-teachers can purchase to give them guidelines on what to teach. There is also a great deal of help accessible on the Net. The problem facing any parents who wish to teach their own children is providing a rounded education.

All people have a natural tendency to specialize in one subject or group of topics like, say, astronomy or the sciences, which is why schools provide numerous teachers, so that every one can teach his or her favourite subject. However, if you are the only teacher you will have to teach all the subjects yourself.

This is why it is best to have a course or set of guidelines to follow. It is hard to teach maths if you have no talent for it, so look at your strengths but also your weaknesses before you take the momentous decision to withdraw your children from school and teach them themselves

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on numerous subjects but is currently involved with Fear At School and home Schooling. If you would like to read more, please go over to our web site entitled Home Schooling.

Using Essential Oils For Their Medicinal And Therapeutic Actions

Commercially sold goods exist to take care of almost every ache, pain, and illness. These range in price reasonable to outrageously expensive. Along with the affordability factor, there is sometimes concern concerning their substances. Certain products consist of chemicals that may be useful for the treatment of a condition, yet cause other harm to the body. One way to naturally cure what ails you is to make use of essential oils, which are derived from nature.

Natural essential oils have been used for medical purposes all through history. Ibn al-Baitar, an Analusian chemist, pharmacist, and physician who existed from 1188 to 1248, was the first to explain the techniques used to generate these oils. The oil by itself is a liquid that contains volatile aroma components taken from plants. The word “essential” is added to indicate that the item possess the distinctive scent, also called essence, of the plant. Distillation is considered the most common way to extract the oil from the plant.

Most people do not realize that these oils are widely-used to flavor or scent goods we commonly buy. Drinks, food, soaps, cosmetics, fragrances, cleaning products, and incense consist of the oils in their ingredient list. When used individually, pure essential oils treat starting from a common skin condition to cancer. Several countries control product claims regarding efficiency, leading suppliers to be purposely ambiguous regarding results. Usage has decreased in modern evidence-based medicine, so someone may need to consult older statistics and facts to learn about their use.

The alternative medicine technique of aromatherapy endorses the curing effects of aromatic elements like essential oil. A single oil could have diverse qualities that facilitate it to provide a number of beneficial results. Aromatherapy essential oils are diluted in carrier oils utilized in massage, diffused into the air by means of a nebulizer, burned as incense, or heated by means of a candle flame. The technique of pharmacology is mostly dismissive of the oils but some of the materials are used in popular remedies or fringe medicine.

For certain purposes, general agreement exists that pure essential oils are chosen to over-the-counter medications. They are also great for treating minor conditions that do not respond nicely to prescription medication. An instance is the effectiveness of vapors in curing persistent coughs and congestion. Substances in these include menthol, anise, camphor, capsaicin, as well as eucalyptus oil.

Several oils may treat the same condition using diverse pharmacology. An oil that treats bronchial and upper respiratory problems may act as a decongestant or expectorant. Many of them even have an antitussive impact by acting as a locally anesthetic counter-irritant. One oil might have opposite effects on the mucous membranes and skin at different instances. Menthol first produces a cold sensation as well as a feeling of burning.

Essential oil can be produced from berries, seeds, leaves, bark, flowers, timber, resin, rhizomes, roots, and peels. It is rather difficult to find estimates regarding total manufacturing of essential oils. Data was created from various sources in 1989, 1990, and 1994 that showed total production of sweet orange oil was maximum, with with twelve thousand tons produced. Eucalyptus oil is widely considered as the most well-known in the world.

Skin Care After The Removal Of Warts

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011
Scentsy | Flameless Candles | Wickless Candles

We are all highly aware of how our skin looks. Young people are especially so. The pressure is really on for people to look like Hollywood stars and we are bombarded with adverts about our blemishes every day.

One of the most common skin issues is warts and luckily for sufferers, it is one of the easiest to cure. Warts can be removed by a couple of minutes of non-painful surgery.

The amputation of warts by surgery or by other ways like freezing may produce a small wound. If you handle this wound carefully, there is no requirement for it ever to be visible.

If your physician or dermatologist does not give you directions on caring for your skin after the removal of warts, you ought to ask and follow the directions to the letter.

These directions are not likely| to be onerous to follow. They will almost certainly just be about applying an antiseptic cream to prevent infection and a bandage or plaster to keep the wound uncontaminated.

However the type of wound you have depends on the procedure of removal that you chose. Surgery and freezing are the worst for developing wounds, but even they are pretty superficial.

If you do not have many warts, you may decide to remove them yourself by applying a wart solvent. Wart solvent ought to be applied two or three times a day and it will rot the wart away over a period of weeks.

Wart solvent usually contains salicylic acid which does not burn, although you have to be careful to put a drop just on the top of the wart. The wart will seem to grow larger as it disintegrates, but this is normal. After a couple of weeks it will fall off not leaving any scar or wound at all.

My aunty cured me of my warts by rubbing them with a piece of raw steak and burying the steak in the garden. She spoke a couple of words which I did not hear and she told me that once the steak had rotted away, my wart would disappear. She also warned me not to dig the steak up to check.

I was eight years old and the wart was very embarrassingly growing on the end of my nose. About three weeks later, my wart fell off while I was washing in the shower. There was no wound and it never returned. Not many of you will believe that that occurred, but it did.

It seems to me that the best way to avoid having to worry about caring for your skin after the removal of warts is to not use surgery at all if you can avoid it. It is easy to remove warts with over the counter cures like wart solvent (or steak) if you can.

Surgery and freezing are usually reserved for very large infections of warts, but warts are contagious, so it is best to deal with every wart as it shows so that you do not run the risk of spreading the infection to other parts of your body or even to your friends and family.

Caring for your skin after the removal of warts is not an arduous job, but it can be avoided by keeping on top of your warts. As the old saying goes: ‘A Stitch In Time Saves Nine’ and so it is with caring for your skin after the removal of warts as well.
