If you have only been using the telephone for a limited number of years, you might be interested in reviewing a little bit of history about this device. Although it is not necessary for us to go the whole way back to the original telephone, just going back a couple of decades would be enough to fill an encyclopedia of knowledge. Just a few short decades ago, the telephone company was operated manually by a series of operators that sat behind large switch boards. Whenever a call would come in, the operator would pick up the phone and find out where it was being routed to and then they would manually plug-in in order to route the call through. The system worked well for a number of years, but eventually it needed to be upgraded and the telephone company knew that. This is when the 10 digit telephone number came into existence and it was a huge step forward over the old system of talking to a manual operator. By being able to identify where the call was coming from and where it was going to, using this numerical system, the entire process was able to be automated. The area code is the first three digits that you dial whenever you are using the full 10 digit telephone number. During that time whenever the new numbers were becoming available, these codes were assigned to specific areas of the country, either large or small, depending on the amount of telephones that were in existence. It seemed that we were never going to run out of all of the area codes that were available, but they are getting used up at a faster rate today. The next three digits that you dial whenever you are dialing a 10 digit number is more localized than the area code. Since there are 999 different variations that can be used within any given area code, it helps you to narrow down exactly where the telephone number is going to. This also helps the computers to route the call quickly. Something else that took place in recent years that was rather interesting is the change from a rotary dial system to a pushbutton dial system. Unless you can remember 40 years ago or so, you may not even know that that was a rotary system in place. Instead of pushing numbers and hearing a tone, you would turn the numbers and allow it to go back, the clicks counting off the numbers to the telephone company. We have moved quite a bit away from the house phone now and many of us are exclusively using cellular telephones in order to place all of our calls. The fax machine is also becoming increasingly popular and as a result, more and more area codes are being used up regularly. Even though it wasn’t all that many years ago that we didn’t carry cell phones around, most of us could not imagine that day ever coming again. It is difficult to tell what the future is going to hold for us as far as the telephone and technology are concerned.
