Have you ever bought an item of equipment that you thought could come in really handy only to leave it lying around for months because you could not figure out how to set it up? Or not set all the functions up, because it would have taken hours to read through the manual, which looked as if it had been translated by a machine anyway? I had an alarm clock once that had dozens of features like waking me up at diverse times on the weekend to during the week and randomly selecting a radio channel every day to wake me up. It also had a feature with which I could train it to understand some voice commands, but I could not be bothered with all that. I just wanted it to wake me up whenever I set it. Video recorders are similar devices. How many times do you hear of people setting their video recorder to record a movie only to get a documentary on another channel? It used to occur a lot, didn’t it? The point that I am getting at here is that the designers of these machines have been told to put as many functions as possible into them up to a price in order to be all things to all people. However, in making their machines so complicated, a lot of people decide not to bother using them at all and will avoid that make in the future, which is the exact opposite of what the manufacturers wanted. The next time you go out looking for some electronic gadget, you will say to yourself: “Oh, So-And-So, you need a degree to use one by So-And-So. I’m not getting one of theirs”. So how can this affect you? Well, if you have to coordinate anything that you expect others to take part in or be animated about, try not to make it overly complicated. I am not saying ‘dumb-down’, just don’t show off by putting all the bells and whistles on it merely to show that you can do that. People will not thank you for it, they will take no notice of your project. This has a great deal of implications for on line projects where people can be thousands of miles apart but still be collaborating on a joint development from home. The time we spend with our children is very precious, and this story will emphasize that even more. If you’re a parent with younger children, this story is virtually essential. A guy came home from work and the first thing his son asked him was “How much do you paid an hour?” This wasn’t quite the welcome home he had expected, but he answered his son honestly “I get $20 an hour”. He was still wondering why his son has asked then when another question came forth; “So can I please have $10 from you?” He wasn’t prepared for that question at all and was angry that his sin had been fishing for information only to get money out of him. He worked hard for that $20 and things were difficult financially. He told him bluntly what he thought of his questions and that he would be in serious trouble if he tried to get money out him by those means again. The boy was bitterly disappointed by the way his father had reacted and he walked away quietly and sadly. That night as he was tucking his son into bed, he started to feel guilty about what had happened earlier and got a $10 bill from his wallet and gave it to his son. A smile spread across the boys face and he dived under his pillow and pulled out ten $1 bills. His dad got really upset then and asked why he had asked him for money when he already had some. The little boy held the money in his hand and looked up at his dad and spoke very quietly, “I needed $20 so I could pay for an hour of your time….” An hour spent with your kids is absolutely priceless. I have discovered an effective strategy to keep myself from going into downward spirals of resentment, blame and self doubt, when I find myself upset over thoughts like, “I not making any money in this business” or ” I just can’t do Network Marketing”. When I realize I have thoughts like these, I make an effort to shift my thoughts and make the positive argument. As a result of a psychological phenomenon that some have labeled “argumentative reasoning”, we are very skilled at arguing a particular case. When we take a position, we search for evidence to support it, and we find reasons that establish our point, and then we stop, satisfied. This mental process gives us the illusion that our position is objective and well justified. However, if we try to argue the reverse position, we can make that case very easily. If I tell myself, “I can’t sell” I can come up with examples of the times I missed a sale; if I tell myself “I am a friendly person” I remember all the times when I reached out to someone. I am generally able to argue both conclusions quite persuasively. To make use of this phenomenon, I have resolved to make a “positive argument” to challenge my critical thoughts about my network marketing company or my marketing efforts. Making the “positive argument” also helps me combat my decided practice of unconsciously overestimating my ability to accomplish certain results relative to other people. There are studies that have shown that when a husband and wife estimated what percentage of housework each performed, the percentage added up to more then 120 percent. The same was true business school students estimated how much they had contributed to a team effort, that total was 139 percent. The ‘positive argument” method has the added benefit of helping to make realistic estimates. Now when I start thinking, that no one is interested in my network marketing opportunity I now shift my thoughts and make the opposite argument. I argue to myself that I see the opportunity and there are thousands of others who see the opportunity and like the product. Then I go through all the advantages to network marketing and all the benefits of the product and I realize again why I joined a network marketing company.
