The newest smartphones are making quite a splash these days, with Verizon intoducing the Droid Eris in early November…just in time for the holiday season. It’s being marketed as a cutting-edge handset with an entry-level price tag, but can it’s claims as the “iPhone Killer” really be true? I really can’t say…But I do know this — I have been walking around with this new droid for two weeks now, and you won’t find a better value for the money shopping for a smartphone this holiday season. Not only that, but this handset is completely loaded with innovative features and standard apps, and it’s hard to believe that HTC can make money on this device for the $99 price tag. I must say that after a year like this one, I won’t be buying any wide-screen tv’s for gifts this Christmas…But for under a hundred bucks, a nifty little touchscreen phone like the Eris droid is still within my budget. Thanks to Google and Verizon, this little droid is loaded with cutting-edge features, including: 1. Record your videos easily with the 5- megapixel autofocus camera, upload it with the killer YouTube app, and watch it within seconds displayed on the 3.2″ Hi-Res touchsceen. 2. HTC has done a nice job designing some custom apps that they include as standard features on the Eris droid…My favorite is the Twitter app. Of course you can visit the Android Market to further customize your new droid. 3. The Eris droid doubles as a GPS device, featuring a useful “Where am I now?” feature, and turn-by-turn directions thanks to Google maps…Of course, it’s also WiFi and Bluetooth enabled. It’s amazing that HTC has found a way to include their “Multi Touch” feature with the Eris Droid, and it really underscores the value of this device at a $99 dollar price point. Multi-Touch lets you “pinch and zoom” images displayed on the touchscreen, and it’s really a seamless interface (and one that you won’t find on the new Motorola device). In terms of battery life, the HTC Droid Eris will give you 3 1/2 hours of talk time, and 375 hours of standby time (that adds up to about half a month). Place it on the charger at the end of the day, and this droid should be good to go for a full day of yacking on the phone. There is only one thing that I would change one the Droid Eris: a physical keyboard. This is really just a small quibble, because the touchscreen is accurate and responsive…Even for a guy with fingers that look more like bananas. Sometimes I forget that a whole generation of has grown up social networking on touchscreens, so virtual keyboards are probably not an issue for most people. To be honest, despite (or maybe because of) all the hype for the Droid Eris, I didn’t have great hopes for this device…But boy did it surprise me. This droid is a terrific combination of performance and functionality, all wrapped around a beautiful interface. And you’ll be hard pressed to find an electronics device this Christmas — in any catgory — that is a better value than this great little droid. What 3 things do you need to know before purchasing your nextsmartphone? Don’t get burnt…find out from Dave first right here. |
